Diocese of New Westminster Anniversary Banquet
Banquet aims to raise $50,000 for church’s relief and development work
Submitted by Kevin Dixon
This autumn marks the 50th anniversary of the Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund (PWRDF), and there’s going to be a party to celebrate it on Saturday, October 3 at St. Philip’s Church, 3737 W. 27th Ave., Vancouver. We will begin with a no host bar at 6:30 p.m. with the dinner to begin at 7:00 p.m.
Mark your calendar and plan to attend this very special banquet hosted by Bishop Michael Ingham. We will enjoy delicious food, toe-tapping entertainment with East Coast flair, and hear stories of the good work that has been achieved through the generosity of Canadian Anglicans who have contributed more than $80 million to the PWRDF since its beginning. Our uplifting speaker will be Cheryl Curtis, Executive Director of PWRDF.
PWRDF came into existence as a result of a terrible human tragedy in Canadian history. In 1958, in Springhill, Nova Scotia, there was an underground explosion in a coal mine. 174 men were in the mine when it collapsed, and 75 died as a result of the disaster. The tragedy moved Anglicans and other Canadians to respond with assistance for the stricken families. As a result of this experience, the church recognized the need for an efficient process to channel assistance quickly in situations of emergency. In 1959 – fifty years ago this autumn – The Primate's World Relief Fund was established.
Tickets for this diocesan banquet are $50, available by phoning Eileen Nurse at the synod office at (604) 684-6306 ext 228. You can also place an order for tickets through St. Mary’s parish office at (604) 261-4228. Those in attendance will be encouraged to make a financial pledge in honour of the Primate’s Fund anniversary over and above current support. Our fundraising goal at this event is $50,000 in cash and pledges.
Space is limited, so plan to purchase your tickets early. Bring a friend. Fill a table!
